About Me

I'm Adam W. Metzler — a 5–12 instrumental music teacher (band director) and the district Technology Director for my school in Mars Hill, Maine. Yes, both jobs. No, I don't sleep much.

Where it started

I grew up in Avon, NY, just south of Rochester, right as personal computing was becoming a real thing. I cut my teeth on a Tandy 1000 and a parade of IBM ThinkPads, learning to repair and troubleshoot anything I could get my hands on — usually for friends and family who just wanted their stuff to work.

From music school to web design

I went to the University of Maine for instrumental music education. After college I substitute taught in New York for three years and played with community orchestras. When my musical group needed a website, I taught myself web design — and that quickly turned into freelance work for other groups and local businesses.

Mars Hill, Maine

I've been teaching in Mars Hill since 2006. I rebuilt the district website, kept getting handed more tech responsibilities, and eventually became the entire one-person Technology Department — all while still running the band program.

The Adam on Tech angle

There are plenty of tech people who end up in schools. I'm the opposite: a trained teacher who happens to be deep into technology. That perspective is what I try to bring to every video and post — explaining the tech in a way that actually makes sense to the people who have to use it.

Off the clock

Married since 2006. A few cats, two Siberian Huskies, and a serious golf habit — I've coached varsity golf for 15 years and volleyball for 14. If I'm not in front of a computer, I'm probably on a course or at a rehearsal.
